Opening Remarks
Chung-Hey Chen, RN, Ph.D, Dean of the College of Nursing, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan
Convener, 11th EAFONS
Welcome to the 11th Annual International Conference of the East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS). Thank you all so much for traveling from near and far to Taiwan and the city of Kaohsiung to take part in this, the 11th forum on East Asian doctoral education and scholarship. I also wish to express my deepest gratitude to the many people who have worked so hard to organize and actualize this year’s meeting
We are in the fortunate position today of being able to build upon all the hard work that EAFONS’ members have accomplished over the past 10 years to create and expand doctoral programs in nursing throughout East Asia. Our formal as well as our informal social networks have become stronger, more complex, and broader, reaching beyond East Asia to become truly international in both vision and endeavor. This year’s conference, under the theme, “The Future of Doctoral Nursing Programs in Asia: Cooperation & Integration across Nations,” continues this core mission of EAFONS, of advancing knowledge and ties between diverse nations, between a wide variety of nursing subfields and programs, and between an array of approaches to scholarship and practice.
By gathering here in Kaohsiung at the 11th Annual International Conference of EAFONS, our goal is to advance doctoral education in nursing in East Asia. I hope that we all can become more knowledgeable, skilled, and ethical nurse educators, researchers, and practitioners who will continue to collaborate with each other and share resources through this international forum.
Furthermore, through this event, I sincerely hope that those of us gathered here not only participate in international academic nursing society, where together we can strengthen nursing knowledge and facilitate dialogue among nursing scholars in East Asian countries, but also that everyone here has a chance to see Kaohsiung, to take in the sights and experience the culture, charm and beauty of Taiwan.
Thank you.
