Connecting Taiwan and the Philippines: KMU College of Pharmacy Visits UP Manila College of Pharmacy

Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) has long regarded international engagement as a vital pillar of academic excellence. In this context, the upcoming institutional visit to the University of the Philippines Manila (UP Manila) represents a strategic opportunity to deepen collaboration with a highly respected regional partner. For the KMU School of Pharmacy, this visit is not a ceremonial exchange but a carefully planned mission to explore concrete avenues for academic cooperation, establish a sustainable framework for international exchange, and create meaningful opportunities for student mobility and recruitment between Taiwan and the Philippines.

As the national health sciences center of the Philippines, UP Manila plays a pivotal role in training health professionals who serve both local communities and the broader region. Its College of Pharmacy, with strong emphases on public health, clinical practice, pharmaceutical sciences, and community engagement, closely aligns with KMU’s vision of socially responsive, research-informed pharmacy education. The KMU delegation, led by the Dean of the School of Pharmacy, Professor Shyh-Chyun Yang, together with the Director of International Affairs, Assistant Professor Yung-Yi Cheng, and Assistant Professor Pamela Berilyn So from the Department of Fragrance and Cosmetic Science, will visit UP Manila with a clear goal: to identify specific, practical pathways for collaboration in research, teaching, and student exchange, and to build institutional mechanisms that will support these initiatives over the long term.

This visit is designed to enable both sides to gain understanding of each other’s strengths and priorities. UP Manila will present an overview of the university and its College of Pharmacy, highlighting its role in the Philippine health system, its history of public service, and its academic and research capabilities. This will be crucial in identifying how the programs of both institutions can complement one another. UP Manila’s strong integration with public hospitals, community health initiatives, and regulatory agencies provides a rich learning environment for KMU students, offering exposure to diverse patient populations, pressing public health challenges, and community-oriented pharmaceutical care.

In turn, KMU will present an overview of the School of Pharmacy and its departments, showcasing strengths in advanced pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy, and the distinctive expertise of the Department of Fragrance and Cosmetic Science. By highlighting its research facilities, curricular innovations, and industry partnerships, KMU aims to position itself as a robust partner for UP Manila’s academic community and an attractive destination for its students and faculty. These exchanges of information will help both sides identify areas of synergy and lay the groundwork for collaborative programs that are academically rigorous and socially relevant.

Student exchange and recruitment are among the most promising dimensions of this emerging collaboration. During the visit, the KMU delegation will engage directly with UP Manila students, introducing KMU as a vibrant destination for study, research, and professional training in pharmacy and related disciplines. KMU’s academic programs, research infrastructure, and international campus environment can be presented to demonstrate how Filipino students may benefit from studying in Taiwan through short-term exchanges, research attachments, or future degree pathways. The delegation will also be able to gather feedback from students and faculty at UP Manila, helping KMU better understand the academic interests, career aspirations, and support needs of prospective Filipino students.

At the same time, KMU is eager to welcome UP Manila students to its campus to participate in laboratory work, clinical exposure, and specialized learning in areas such as cosmetic science and natural products. By engaging in hands-on research and interdisciplinary projects, visiting students will gain insight into Taiwan’s healthcare and pharmaceutical landscape, as well as KMU’s strengths in innovation and applied science. These exchanges are envisioned as reciprocal opportunities that will enrich learning environments at both universities, promote intercultural understanding, and broaden the global outlook of future pharmacists.

Equally important is the development of joint research initiatives. Throughout the visit, faculty members from both institutions will engage in focused discussions on research collaboration, with particular attention to areas of shared strength: drug development, pharmaceutical technology, clinical and community pharmacy, natural and traditional products, and emerging fields in cosmetic science. The feasibility of bilateral projects supported by Taiwan–Philippines collaboration schemes, such as the MECO–TECO program, and other international funding bodies will be explored. For KMU, such collaborations are strategic investments that provide platforms for working with colleagues in different health systems and regulatory environments, enrich the research portfolio with regionally relevant topics, and increase the international visibility of its scientific output. Joint research will also create avenues for student involvement, allowing them to participate in cross-border projects at an early stage of their careers and strengthening the pipeline of young researchers with international experience.

Faculty exchange is another critical dimension for sustaining and deepening this partnership. The two institutions will explore opportunities for short-term faculty visits, during which KMU academic staff may teach, deliver lectures, or participate in collaborative research at UP Manila, and UP faculty may undertake similar activities at KMU. Such exchanges are expected to stimulate curriculum development, introduce innovative teaching approaches, and foster long-term academic relationships. Faculty members often serve as anchors of international collaboration, identifying shared research interests, mentoring students involved in joint activities, and maintaining ongoing communication between institutions. By supporting their mobility, both universities invest in the human relationships that sustain meaningful collaboration over time.

This upcoming visit to UP Manila marks the beginning of a dynamic, mutually beneficial collaboration grounded in shared commitments to academic excellence, public service, and international engagement. Through discussions on student exchange, research collaboration, and faculty mobility, KMU and UP Manila will outline a rich agenda of future activities that can grow organically in response to emerging needs and opportunities. As KMU advances this partnership, it is confident that the collaboration will strengthen its capacity to offer globally oriented education, expand opportunities for students and faculty, and contribute to a more interconnected and resilient academic community in the region and beyond.
